Is ‘data science’ an existential threat for actuaries?

Beginning in the 1980s, actuarial science grew rapidly, based on its rating as a “best career” and a rapid growth of academic programs. However, in recent years, a softening of the actuarial market and the rise of data science as a hot field have had a negative impact on the reputation of actuarial science as a career.
