It’s a truism that people are a company’s most important asset. It also happens to be actually true, not only for our own business but for the communities we live in.
I’d like to tell you about two Buck employees who have shown an astonishing willingness to make a difference in people’s lives.
Pedal the Cause
Scott Anderson handed over a check for $4,524,521 to Siteman Cancer Center in his hometown of St. Louis. Scott, our US Health Practice Growth Leader, served as board chair for Pedal the Cause this year, a cycling challenge and weekend community celebration with the goal of curing all cancers for everyone. This record-breaking $4.5-million donation was raised by 3,598 riders and spinners, 377 kids and over 1,200 volunteers.
The generous support of sponsors, led by Edward Jones as the presenting sponsor, ensures that 100 percent of donations made to Pedal the Cause directly fund cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. The center is part of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.
Swim to Live, Swim to Give
Lori Block, our Global Insights Leader, acting on her own, has personally raised over $4,000 in donations to the American Society for Suicide Prevention. Lori completed what for her was “an epic swim” – 5 miles in open water, the longest distance available to participants in the annual St. Croix Coral Reef Swim. Lori surpassed her goal of raising $3,500 in donations.
The annual race begins (by happy coincidence) on world-famous Buck Island, which boasts a spectacular beach and living coral reef designated as an underwater park by the National Park Service, and continues along St. Croix’s shoreline,
Lori’s pretty excited about her achievement. “I made it! I completed the 5-mile swim (5.47 according to my GPS watch, thanks to my zigzagging in the currents) in the time allowed.”
These are amazing results, achieved through tireless commitment on the part of our people. I’m proud that they’re serving as such great ambassadors for Buck in the community!
